I’m off to new adventures…after nearly 2 years of following the Northborough events, and happenings, I’ve come to a point that I no longer have time to do justice in gathering all of the great events and organizations in town. It’s been great having the opportunity to work and meet so may of you in town!
If there is anyone who would like to assume the site, drop me a note. See you around town!

It’s not so lonely at the top when you are surrounded by so many of your musical classmates performing on stage at Boston Symphony Hall which is widely regarded as one of the two or three finest concert halls in the world.
Ten Algonquin students were selected to participate in the MMEA (Massachusetts Music Educators Association) All-State Conference and Concert from March 28 – March 30, 2011.
Musicians from across the state auditioned for the coveted opportunity to spend two days rehearsing with top conductors and performing on stage in one of the most historic and acoustically perfect concert halls.
“The students get such great exposure to fabulous conductors who are either at collegiate level or professional musicians” said Amy Collins, Chairman of Fine and Performing Arts Department at Algonquin. “The conductors inspire the kids to explore new ideas about performance. They come away with pride, confidence and a lot of inside tips”.
While the kids were rehearsing, the teachers attended conference workshops. Amy was especially thrilled with this years’ concert because she accompanied the All-State Chorus on clarinet on a piece titled, “Mayim, Mayim”.
The display case outside the high school auditorium has gotten very crowded since the students in the music department returned from The Spirit of America Music Festival in Washington DC on April 3rd.
In addition to unloading all the suitcases and instruments, the students proudly unloaded 8 trophies for their outstanding performances in this annual festival which is sponsored by Performing Arts Consultants Music Festivals and attended by schools throughout the country.
Ninety-nine students from Algonquin performed, many in more than one ensemble. The results were impressive:
Concert Choir – First Place, Silver Rating
Camerata – First Place, Gold Rating
Chamber Choir – First Place, Gold Rating – Grand Champion Choral
Symphonic Band – First Place, Silver Rating
String Orchestra – First Place, Gold Rating
Wind Ensemble – First Place, Gold Rating – Grand Champion Instrumental
“The kids really represented Algonquin and the communities of Northborough and Southborough well. They are true champions” said Amy Collins, department chair and director of the String Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. “Not only did the students perform well in the festival, they had a great time sightseeing around the DC area – a very successful trip”
The group was able to visit the Capitol Building and other monuments as well as the Smithsonian Museum and Arlington Cemetery. They ended the trip with a dinner/dance/awards ceremony cruise on the Potomac River. The kids had a well-deserved blast!
Please note there was no trash or recycling collection on Monday, April 18th as the Town Hall was closed in observance of Patriot’s Day
As a result, Monday – Friday routes will be collected Tuesday – Saturday.

The Northborough Ed Foundation (NEF) held its Second Annual Quiz Night on Friday April 1 at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club. The winning team was “Let’s Look It Up”, which was represented the Northborough Free Library. “Let’s Look It Up” teammates Vin and Marjorie Femia, Deborah Hersh and Ellen Church bested 30 other teams to take home the 2011 championship.
NEF would like to thank the 31 teams for their outstanding turnout. The positive energy in the room was tremendous, the game play exciting, and the final outcome hotly contested. The increase in team participation from 13 teams in year one to 31 registered teams in year two is indicative of the fun and competitive atmosphere of Quiz Night. The creativity shown in the various costumes and team names added to the festive spirit of the night. The NEF is truly grateful for the involvement of all the participants and we eagerly look forward to planning next year’s edition of Quiz Night.
NEF would like to thank its corporate sponsors for supporting Quiz Night, which include: Alexander, Aronson, Finning & Co., CPA’s and Melfa Wealth Management.
NEF would like to thank the following Northborough families who sponsored questions: the Reilly family, the Forbush family, the Leonard family, the Jankovich family, the Smith family, and the Stone family. NEF also offers our thanks to all the families and organizations that contributed to the raffle gift baskets.
NEF would like to extend a thank you to Cyprian Keyes for hosting Quiz Night, as well as Gillis Landscape and Nursery for providing the flowers for the centerpieces. A special thanks goes out to our talented emcee, Art Duffy, and our judges Karen Scopetski, Tom Lowe, and Rep.-D Harold Naughton, Jr. Finally, the NEF would like to thank our Quiz Night Committee members Sue Seppa, Tracy Duffy, and Sylvia Travis.
The proceeds from the Second Annual Quiz Night will be allocated toward funding multiple project grants throughout the school system. These projects will be administered by the dedicated Northborough teachers and will positively impact literacy, physical fitness, as well as the music and special education programs among others. Explanations of the funded projects will be announced shortly on the NEF website, located at www.northboroughed.org, a site that was designed and developed by students at Algonquin Regional High School.
