On Tuesday, January 12th, the Enrichment Committee of the Peaslee PTO hosted a children’s author and illustrator, Brian Lies. (www.brianlies.com) Brian has written and illustrated many children’s books, most notably Bats at the Beach and Bats in the Library, both New York Times’ bestsellers. Brian met with students in grade 1-5 and talked about his experiences and journey of making children’s books—”from early “sloppy copies” through labor-intensive revisions, and finally to finished books”. Interestingly enough, the library teacher at Peaslee, Nancy Kellner organizes an annual “Peasleecott Award” for best illustrated book each year. Students are presented books and eventually vote on their favorite choice. A few years ago, Bats at the Beach won the school’s most coveted literary award–the Peasleecott! It was exciting for the Peaslee students to see up close and in person the actual author and illustrator of a favorite book and learn the process of how hard work can turn ideas into published books.
