With the economy as is, many find themselves staying local this summer, so I wanted to suggest a couple of my (possibly lesser known) recommendations:
Hopkinton State Park, Park offers a swimming area separate from the boating area, as well as walking trails and picnic areas. Route 85, Hopkinton has kayaks, canoes and sailboats for rent. Boat rent is open weekdays 11am to 7pm and weekends 10am-7pm, See www.outdoorrec.com, 508-435-3965 .
Mendon Twin Drive In, Who can resist a little nostalgia? Drive in has been in operation since 1954 and has 2 screens. 35 Milford Street Mendon, open 7 days a week, box office opens at 6:30pm on Friday and Saturday and 7:00pm other days, only $20 per carload (higher prices vehicles with larger than 10 passengers). www.mendondrivein.com or 508-473-4958 .
Another hidden gem is Fruitlands Museum: part museum, part hiking trails, part tea house; all with a wonderful of the Wachusett Mountain. http://www.fruitlands.org/
Also remember the library offers discount passes to many museums and attractions. Passes can reserved online at : www.northboroughlibrary.org/northborough/museum.aspand may be picked up the day before the reservation. You must have a town library card to make use of the passes. Locations offered: Mystic Aquarium, Davis Farm Land, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, Children’s Museum, Discovery Museum, Garden in the Woods, Worcester Art Museum, Tower Hill, New England Aquarium and others.
A bit further a field, though well worth the trip, Providence Rhode Island shows the beauty of their cityscape with their “Waterfire” nights. Event includes live music, dancing and a light of the downtown waterway. http://www.waterfire.org/
