Sunday Afternoon of History in Northborough

by Gily Nachum

Are you fed up with the kids running around the house, or saying I’m bored? Why not change the mood and start a journey through time without leaving your home town.
We started our journey one Sunday afternoon with a question of who was Mary Goodnow.

Mary Goodnow was a resident of Northborough and on 18 of August 1707 was murdered by Indians near what is now RT.20. The men who found her body buried it on that spot. The town of Northborough erected a grave stone on the burial site on 1889. Mary Goodnow grave site can be access from Pheasant Hills Property on Main Street. So as a start we went to visit the grave stone. It was a short and pleasant walk through the wood. A word of advice, bug spray is a must in this time of year.
We continued our search at the Northborough Historical Society. The museum is located on 50 Main Street and open every Sunday afternoon between 2- 4PM in the summer. The museum is rich in artifacts collected in the area. We saw Indian arrow heads, furniture clothing and work tools used by residents of Northborough through history. We found written articles on both Indians and white inhabitants. And above all we met volunteers who were happy to help us learn about the history of Northborough.
Mary Goodnow grave site is just one of Northborough historic markers. You can search the links below and start planning your tour back in time without leaving town.
