Styrofoam Recycling

Meet Polly Styrene – Recycling Queen May 7, 8:30 – 1:00 at the Free Styrofoam Recycling Collection Event

Greetings!  Before I tell you how I gained my regal title, I must speak to my namesake – polystyrene – which is an amazing plastic material.  It is lightweight and insulates temperature extremely well.  You’ll therefore find it as products ranging from hot beverage cups to coolers.  It works so well that one company even named it something else: StyrofoamTM which can be found in home insulation products, for example.    In addition to its insulation properties, polystyrene also tolerates pressure really well.  It is used to pack fragile items – either as packing peanuts or well-formed packing blocks.  And talk about durability!  This stuff can be used over and over and lasts forever!   The latter point unfortunately paved my way to the crown!

By whatever name you choose, Styrofoam or polystyrene, it isn’t biodegradable.  Even after hundreds of years, this stuff, though amazing, will still be found in landfills.   Fortunately it can be recycled and find new life in different products.  But with curbside recycling readily available, many think the PS 6 recycling symbol means they can toss their Styrofoam in with their other recyclables.  Not true!  Many municipalities do not recycle it.  If it happens to show up in the recycle collection, the Styrofoam is sorted to the trash pile and heads for the landfill.   The Northboro Junior Woman’s Club created me so that I might spread the word.  My mission is to promote the reduced use of Styrofoam (think reusable thermal mug instead), to promote the reuse of Styrofoam (think crafts to storage bins to re-packing), and finally, to promote recycling Styrofoam.  Yes my crown is heavy!   In partnership with ReFoamIt, LLC and the Town of Northboro, the NJWC is sponsoring a FREE collection of Styrofoam products on May 7 at the Department of Public Works Yard on Route 20 in Northboro.  All are welcome to drop off their clean Styrofoam, rain or shine, between 8:30am and 1:00pm.  For more information please visit northborojuniors.org or ReFoamIt.com.   Inspired by my namesake, I have accepted the role of Recycling Queen and hope you will help me to complete my mission!

National Library Snapshot Day 4/13

On, Wednesday, April 13, the Northborough Free Library will join libraries across the Commonwealth and the nation to provide a “snapshot” of what happens in a day in the life of libraries. How many books are checked out? How many people receive help finding a job? Doing their taxes? Doing their homework? During Snapshot Day, libraries will collect data and photos that help demonstrate the value of libraries and raise public awareness that libraries are busier than ever.

Everyone can participate: Visit the library to check out a book, DVD, or audiobook; use the Internet or check your e-mail and Facebook account; come to our Gluten Free Baking Program (registration required), the mystery book discussion group, or the children’s Book Ambassadors Book Club (registration required); or bring your laptop and get some work done.

“We’re looking forward to a fun, busy day that helps us show how much our residents use their library,” said Jean Langley, Library Director. Busy days are the norm at libraries across the state. Over the past decade, libraries in Massachusetts have experienced a dramatic surge in usage, including a 50% increase in library visits, while experiencing a 39% reduction in state funding to support libraries.

Nationally, Snapshot Day is supported by the American Library Association which will compile state data to provide a national look at a day in the life of libraries. Massachusetts Library Snapshot Day is sponsored by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the Massachusetts Regional Library System, the Massachusetts Library Association, and the Massachusetts School Library Association. Visit: mass.gov/libraries or contact Jean Langley for more information.

YNIA hosts Recycling Fundraiser

Northborough’s St. Rose of Lima YNIA teens set date for annual RECYCLING/COLLECTION DAY-Saturday, April 30th 9am-1pm, 244 West Main St, Northborough, MA.

Northborough’s Saint Rose of Lima Church, Young Neighbors in Action (YNIA) service group is in its 6th year and going strong.  Young Neighbors in Action is a year long program for teens of St. Rose in which they learn about Catholic social teachings and prepare and fundraise for a week-long overnight summer mission trip. Some of the year long activities leading up to the summer service trip include monthly dinner meetings and serious group discussions, ongoing volunteer service by teens which include raking leaves and shoveling snow for elderly, organizing holiday parties for less fortunate children in Worcester, and participating in the many fundraisers required to send 60 plus teens on these week long summer service trips.

The fundraising is also a year long commitment. The teens have sold candles, calendars, and participated in the Northborough Holiday Trolley Stop at St. Rose of Lima Church. They have made 22 dozen meatballs for our annual pasta dinner and 132 footlong subs for their Super Bowl fundraiser. Most recently, the teens have invited the community to participate in their One Pot Wonders cookoff. Prizes were won by our top three favorite dishes. Other fundraisers include a Car Wash and 50-50 raffle to be held June 11th, the Pancake Breakfast on May 22nd, and on Saturday, April 30th YNIA will hold its annual RECYCLING & COLLECTION DAY, where for a small fee, you can drop off your unwanted equipment, electronic items, and household appliances. All fundraisers are held at St Rose of Lima Church, 244 Main St, Northborough, MA.

St. Rose has 60 teens involved and actively participating in YNIA.  This group has 4 separate service mission trips planned for this summer. YNIA has 2 groups spending one week each in Worcester helping at non-profit organizations in the Worcester area such as Friendly House, Community Harvest Project, and St. John’s Soup Kitchen, where the teens will be asked to do a variety of service. Another group of teens will be working on a Habitat for Humanity project in New Rochelle, NY. The teens will help to renovate homes for low income families. The last group of teens will be volunteering at Camp Sunshine in Casco, ME, where the teens will work at a camp for children with cancer.
The group as a whole has a monetary goal of $ 17,000 to be able to send 60 teens and chaperones on these 4 service trips, to date YNIA has raised about $ 6,000 towards this goal.  The funds help with transportation, room and board for the teens and chaperones, in addition to the financial contributions to be made to the charitable organizations that YNIA will assist.
