Senior Calendar

The 2010 AARP Tax Aide Program at the Northborough Senior Center will start Thursday, February 4 and will continue every Thursday until April 8, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  To sign up please call 508-393-5035.  Forty five minutes will be allowed for each person.  People with complex tax returns are advised to seek professional tax assistance. The only exception to the time given is on February 18 and March 18 the time will be 1 to 4:00 p.m. with 45 minutes allotted for each person.

The February Birthday Lunch at the Northborough Senior Center will be Friday, February 26th at 12:00 noon.  You are invited to attend the Birthday Celebration Lunch or just come and have a piece of birthday cake.  If it is your birthday celebration month, your meal will be paid for by the Friends of the Senior Center and you will receive a small gift. The VNA will present three fall prevention programs at the Northborough Senior Center.   On March 1st the third presentation will be about reviewing your medications with a nurse.  Appointments are needed for this event so, please call 508-393-5035 to set up your time.

The Northborough Senior Center has a trip planned for  St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) with a concert by Four Celtic Voices.  This is the group that has been taking Ireland by storm!  You will travel by coach to Venue de Milo in  Swansea, MA where you will dine on your choice of Corned Beef & Cabbage or Baked Haddock with Venus de Milo’s famous Minestrone Soup, Vegetable,  Bread, Dessert, Coffee/Tea.  Cost is $69.00 per person includes transportation, luncheon and show.  Additional information at the Senior Center and in upcoming newsletters.  Call 508-393-5035 if you have any questions.

The Diabetic Support Group will meet at the Northborough Senior Center on Tuesday, February 23 at 1:00 p.m.  A group discussion with sharing of Information and problem solving will be a part of the meeting.  The meeting is FREE and spouses, family, friends and caregivers of all ages are encouraged to attend.  Please plan to attend this informational meeting.

The Proctor School, 26 Jefferson Road, will be the host school for the School Lunch Program on February 25th at 1:10 p.m. Please call the Senior Center at 508-393-5035 to sign up for this fun-filled event.  If transportation is needed, please call the Northborough COA Van Service at 508-752-9283 as soon as possible.

The Northborough Senior Center presents the following new programs for 2010:

Beginners Line Dancing—March 18 – May 6th, 10-11 AM

Basic Computer Training — March 22 – May 10, 10-11 AM

Beginner Watercolor – Friday, April 9 – June 11, 10 AM to 12 noon

Beginner Acrylics – Tuesday, April 27 – June 22, 6:30 – 8:30 PM

The Northborough Senior Center presents “Masters of Enterprise” offered by Sage Educational Services.  This program series focuses on some of histories most powerful men (Carnegie, Henry Ford, Rockefeller and Sears and Roebuck).  Historian Gary Hylander will present a four-part lecture/discussion series on Tuesdays, April 6, 13, 20, 27, 4-5 p.m.  Fee $20.00. The Floral Craft Class will be held at the Northborough Senior Center on Friday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m.  Andrea Turner of Bolton Manor Nursing Home is the instructor for this class.  Andrea brings with her some artificial flowers and supplies for everyone to make a St. Patrick’s Day themed decoration.  This class is free and open to all.  Please call 508-393-5035 to sign up.

The Northborough Senior Center presents another installment in the VNA Fall Prevention series on Monday, March 8, 1-3:00 p.m. entitled “Orthostatic Blood Pressure”.  Orthostatic Hypotension is a form of low blood pressure that happens when a person stands up from sitting or lying down.  It can make you feel dizzy or lightheaded and can cause fainting.  Your blood pressure will be assessed in two ways: sitting and standing. There will be a free Legal Clinic at the Northborough Senior Center on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.  Attorney Marie McGuirk will conduct this clinic.  Appointments are necessary, so please call 508-393-5035 to set up your appointment

The Northborough Council on Aging will have their monthly meeting on Thursday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the new Senior Center on 119 Bearfoot Road.  Open to the public.

The Northborough Senior Center through a Title III grant from BayPath Elder Services, Inc. and in cooperation with the Westborough and Southborough Senior Centers will offer a “Food For Life” series taught by Master Chef Rose Lee.  The following is a list of the classes, dates, and times:

March 10 — “Introduction to How Foods Fight Cancer” & “Fueling Up On Low-Fat Foods”

March 17 — “Favoring Fiber” & “Immune-Boosting Foods”

March 24 — “Discovering Dairy Alternatives” & “Replacing Meat”

March 31 — “Cancer-Fighting Compounds” & “Healthy Weight Control”

Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30 p.m.  To register, contact the Northborough Senior Center at 508-393-5035.  There is a $20 per person suggested donation for the entire class series which will be held at the Westborough Senior Center.  Van transportation will be available.

The Northborough Senior Men’s Group will meet at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 11th.   Ed Bombard will speak about starting a Veteran’s Group.  This meeting will be at the new Senior Center (119 Bearfoot Road).  Please call 508-393-5035 to sign up if you plan to attend.  Coffee and pastries will be served at 8:00 a.m. and breakfast at 8:30 a.m.  Cost is $3.00.

Board Game Buddies (an interaction group between students and senior adults) will meet Thursday, March 11 at 1:45 p.m. at Proctor School.  Please join the students and play Scrabble, Boggle, bingo, Yahtzie, Uno, Chess or Checkers.  If anyone new is interested, please come a few minutes early to fill out a CORI check.  Open to all.  It is a fun time for everyone.  If transportation is needed, please call the Northborough COA Transportation Van Service at 508-752-9283 as soon as possible.

Another VNA Fall Prevention installment entitled “Exercise” will be held on Monday, March 15th, 1-3:00 p.m. at the Northborough Senior Center. You will learn about the importance of exercise to maintain strength and balance to reduce the risk of falling.  Learn seated and standing exercises for improving leg strength and balance.  Wear slacks and comfortable shoes. You’ll take home a packet of helpful illustrated exercises.  Call 508-393-5035 to sign up for this program.

Please join the Northborough Senior Center on Thursday, March 18 at 1:00 p.m. for a presentation by the Better Business Bureau of Central New England, Inc. They have created a Senior Awareness Program whose goal is to educate seniors about ways to recognize and avoid common scams.  Learn ways to protect yourself from scam artists who always seem to be coming up with new schemes.  Refreshments will be served.  Please RSVP to 508-393-5035.

The official grand opening of the new Senior Center will take place on Sunday, March 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.

In March, the School Lunch Program will be held at Robert E. The Friends of the Northborough Senior Center will have their monthly meeting Monday, March 22 at 1:30 p.m. at the new Senior Center

The Diabetic Support Group will meet Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at 1:00p.m. at the new Northborough Senior Center, 119 Bearfoot Road.  There will be a guest speaker, Al Whittaker of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) who will speak about ADA’s recommendations for Healthy Eating for people with diabetes. This should be an excellent meeting, so bring your questions and get some answers.  The meeting is FREE and spouses, family, friends and caregivers of all ages are encouraged to attend.

The Northborough Senior Center would like to invite you to join us on Tuesday, April 6th at 1:00 p.m. to hear about exciting trips they will be offering to Europe, as well as right here in the United States to the National Parks.  A Collette Vacations representative will be at the new Senior Center to tell you more about all these wonderful destinations.  Refreshments will be served.

The 30th Annual Senior Conference will be hosted by Senator Eldridge on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School. The conference will offer seniors the opportunity to attend workshops, visit informational tables, obtain health screenings, enjoy lunch, entertainment and have a chance at winning one of dozens of door prizes. As always all aspects of the conference are free.  Coffee and donuts will be served in the morning and a catered hot lunch will be served starting at 11:30 a.m.  Tickets and more information will be available in March.
